Since January 1, 2026, eligibility includes people whose qualifying disability began before their 46th birthday. You can be older than 46 when you open the account.
ABLE accounts offer a way to save and invest for qualified disability expenses—including housing, food, transportation, education and health care—with tax-free withdrawals when the rules are met.
For 2026, the standard contribution limit is $20,000 across all contributors combined. Some working account owners may qualify to contribute more.
A VA disability rating alone doesn’t establish ABLE eligibility, and benefit protections have specific rules. Check eligibility, fees and how an account would interact with your benefits before enrolling.
With Veterans Day approaching, this is an update worth sharing with veterans and their families.
